Updating FXServer (FiveM artifacts) without losing anything

When to update, which folder gets replaced and which one you never touch, and how to roll back if the new version causes trouble.

"Artifacts" are the FXServer files themselves. Updating them brings fixes and is required every so often (txAdmin warns you when your version is too old). The good part: your server (resources, configs, database) is not in that folder, so it is swapped without touching anything of yours.

What gets replaced and what does not

FolderContentsTouched?
C:\FXServer\server (or ~/server on Linux)FXServer and its librariesYes, replaced
txData and your server folderResources, server.cfg, txAdmin dataNo, never

Windows

  1. Stop the server from txAdmin and close FXServer.
  2. Rename the current folder to server-old (so you can roll back).
  3. Download the Latest Recommended server.7z from https://runtime.fivem.net/artifacts/fivem/build_server_windows/master/ and extract it into a new server folder.
  4. Run FXServer.exe as usual. If all is well after a few days, delete server-old.

Linux

systemctl stop fivem # or stop the server from txAdmin
cd /home/fivem
mv server server-old
mkdir server && cd server
wget -O fx.tar.xz "LATEST_RECOMMENDED_LINK"
tar xf fx.tar.xz && rm fx.tar.xz
chown -R fivem:fivem /home/fivem/server
systemctl start fivem

If your txData was inside the server folder, move it to the new one before starting.

Recommended or Latest?

Use Latest Recommended: it is the one Cfx.re considers stable. Newer builds (Latest Optional) bring recent changes and the odd surprise; use them only if a resource needs a minimum version the recommended one does not meet yet.

If the new version causes trouble

Stop the server, delete the new folder and rename server-old back to server. Two minutes and you are back where you were.
