If you run the server with a partner or someone helps you, do not hand over your account details: share the service. Everyone logs in with their own account and you decide until when.
How to share it
- The other person needs their own account at my.electrumhosting.com (signing up is free).
- You go to Services → your VPS and click Manage Sharing.
- Enter the email they signed up with and send the invite.
Access is immediate. They will see your service in their panel, in the section for services shared with them.
What they can and cannot do
| Can | Cannot |
|---|---|
| See the service and its information (IP, status, graphs) | Open the VNC console |
| Start, shut down, restart and force power off | Reinstall the system, reset the password or change the hostname |
| See your payment details or your other services |
In other words: they can help bring the server back up if it goes down, but the decisions that wipe things or change access remain yours alone.
If they need to work inside the server
Sharing the service does not give them remote desktop or SSH access. If they need to work inside, do not give them the Administrator or root password: create a user of their own.
- Windows: create another remote desktop user.
- Linux: create a user with
adduserand let them log in with their own SSH key.
Then, when they stop collaborating, you delete their user and that is it, without changing anything of yours.
Removing access
In the same place, Manage Sharing, remove the person from the list. They lose access immediately. They can also leave the service themselves.
