How to change the root or Administrator password of your VPS

Generating a new password from the panel when you have lost it, and changing it from inside the server when you are already connected.

This is the password you use to log into the server (root on Linux, Administrator on Windows), not the panel one. There are two ways to change it, depending on whether you can still get in.

If you cannot get in: from the panel

  1. Open your service at my.electrumhosting.com.
  2. Go to the Settings tab.
  3. Under Root Password, click Request Password Reset.
  4. The new password arrives by email within seconds.

The server is not rebooted and loses nothing: only the credential changes. On Windows the password applies to the Administrator user; on Linux, to root.

If the email does not arrive, check your spam folder and confirm under My account that the address is right. Our mail comes from our own domain, so some providers misfile it the first time.

If you are already in: from the server itself

This is what we recommend after receiving a password by email, so that yours never travelled through a mailbox.

Linux, connected over SSH:

passwd

It asks for the new one twice. You will not see the characters as you type, which is normal.

Windows, in a PowerShell window as administrator:

net user Administrator *

Also asked twice, also invisible as you type. If you prefer clicking: Win + R → lusrmgr.msc → Users → right-click Administrator → "Set password".

Better still: stop using a password

On Linux, the safest setup is logging in with an SSH key and turning password logins off. We walk through it in the SSH guide. A VPS with a public IP gets automated login attempts from day one, and against a key there is nothing to guess.

If you change it and lock yourself out

Do not panic: open the VNC tab in the panel. It connects you to the server's screen without going through the network, exactly as if you were sitting in front of the machine, and you can fix it from there. Failing that, Request Password Reset under Settings is always available.
