Connecting to your VPS from a Mac, Linux or your phone

The remote desktop and SSH apps that work on macOS, Linux, Android and iPhone, and what to enter in each.

You do not need a Windows PC to manage your VPS. In every case you need the same things: the IP, the username (Administrator on Windows, root on Linux) and the password, which are in the activation email and in the panel.

Windows VPS (remote desktop)

FromApp
MacWindows App (formerly "Microsoft Remote Desktop"), free on the App Store
iPhone / iPadWindows App, free on the App Store
AndroidMicrosoft's remote desktop app ("Windows App" / "Remote Desktop") on Google Play
LinuxRemmina (included in many distributions; otherwise sudo apt install remmina)

In any of them: add a new PC, enter the IP as the computer name, and the username Administrator with its password. If you changed the remote desktop port, type IP:port, for example 203.0.113.10:50000.

If it says the username or password is wrong, check you are typing exactly Administrator. It is the most common mistake.

Linux VPS (SSH)

  • Mac and Linux: SSH is built in. Open the Terminal app and type ssh root@YOUR_IP.
  • Android: Termius or JuiceSSH.
  • iPhone / iPad: Termius.

The first time it asks whether you trust the server's fingerprint: answer yes (yes).

From your phone, just the essentials

From a phone you can restart a service or check a log, but real work is awkward. And remember that to start, stop or restart the VPS you do not need to connect at all: do it from the panel, which works in your phone's browser.
