How to upgrade (or downgrade) your VPS plan

Moving to a plan with more CPU, RAM or disk without losing anything. What you pay, when it applies and what happens if you go down a plan.

If your server has become too small, there is no need to order a second one or migrate anything: you can change plan from the panel and the server stays the same, with the same IP and the same data.

The steps

  1. Go to my.electrumhosting.com and open your service.
  2. Click Upgrade.
  3. Under Choose a product to upgrade to, pick the new plan.
  4. Under Choose the configuration for the upgrade, set the options (operating system, extras…).
  5. Check the Upgrade Summary: it shows your Current Plan, the New Plan and the Total Today.
  6. Confirm. An invoice is generated and the change applies once you pay it.

Exactly what you pay

You are not charged for the whole new plan: only the difference for the days you have left in the period you already paid for. The maths is:

(new plan price − current plan price) ÷ days in the cycle × days remaining

An example: if you pay €10 a month, move to a €20 plan and have 15 days left out of 30, today's total is €5 — half the difference. Your renewal date does not move.

What if I go down a plan?

You can go the other way too. The maths then comes out negative and the difference is added as credit on your account, to be taken off your next invoices. It is not a refund to your card or PayPal. A downgrade applies straight away, with no invoice to pay.

What happens to your server

  • The IP does not change. No DNS to update and nobody to warn.
  • Your data stays. This is not a reinstall: your files, database and configuration are untouched.
  • It reboots once to apply the new resources. Pick a quiet moment if you have players online.
  • Disk grows but does not shrink. Growing is instant; shrinking requires a reinstall, so open a ticket first if you are downgrading.

If the button will not let you

The panel warns that you cannot upgrade whilst there is already an upgrade / downgrade invoice open. That is the usual cause: an earlier upgrade you have not paid. Pay that invoice or ask us to cancel it, then try again.

If what you want is not more power but to pay less often (and save while you are at it), that is a different thing: see how to change your billing cycle.
