How to change your account password and turn on two-factor authentication

Your panel password, two-factor authentication and how to kick out any session you do not recognise.

Careful not to mix them up: this is the password you log into the panel with. The root or Administrator password is a different one and is changed from the server page (we cover that here).

Changing the password

  1. Go to my.electrumhosting.com.
  2. Open My account → Security.
  3. Under Change password, enter your current password, the new one and confirm it.
  4. Save. Your current session stays open.

If you cannot remember your current one, do not come here: use the "Forgot your password?" link on the login screen and you will get an email to set a new one.

Turn on two-factor authentication

This is what actually protects your account, because even if somebody learns your password they cannot get in without the code on your phone. On the same Security screen:

  1. Click Enable two-factor authentication.
  2. Scan the QR code with an app like Google Authenticator, Authy, 2FAS or whichever password manager you use.
  3. Type the six-digit code the app shows you and confirm.

Store the recovery code or the key shown next to the QR somewhere safe that is not the phone itself. If you change phones without it, recovering the account is far slower because we have to verify your identity.

Check your sessions

At the bottom, under Sessions, you get the list of devices your account has been used from, with the one you are on marked as the current device. If you see one you do not recognise: close it, change your password and enable two-factor, in that order.

Advice that actually matters

  • Do not reuse your panel password anywhere else. Most stolen accounts are not cracked: they are opened with a password leaked from some other website.
  • Long beats complicated. Four random words hold up better than eight characters with symbols.
  • We will never ask for your password over Discord, email or a ticket. If somebody does, they are not from ElectrumHosting.
