Setting up a Palworld server

What it needs (16 GB recommended), installation, appearing in the community server list, the settings file (which is not the one it looks like) and becoming admin.

Palworld's official documentation recommends 4 cores and 16 GB of RAM, and over 32 GB if you will have more than 32 players. Memory use grows over the hours, so scheduling a daily restart is a good idea.

1. Download it

# Windows
C:\steamcmd\steamcmd.exe +force_install_dir C:\palworld +login anonymous +app_update 2394010 validate +quit

# Linux (as the steam user)
~/steamcmd/steamcmd.sh +force_install_dir ~/palworld +login anonymous +app_update 2394010 validate +quit

2. Start it

# Windows
C:\palworld\PalServer.exe -publiclobby

# Linux
~/palworld/PalServer.sh -publiclobby

-publiclobby lists it among the community servers; without it, players can only join by IP. Older guides also add -useperfthreads -NoAsyncLoadingThread -UseMultithreadForDS: the official documentation says that since version 1.0 it may run better without them.

3. Settings: mind the file

Start it once and stop it. Then copy DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini (in the server's main folder) to:

  • Windows: Pal\Saved\Config\WindowsServer\PalWorldSettings.ini
  • Linux: Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/PalWorldSettings.ini

Editing DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini directly does nothing. Everything is on one long line, OptionSettings=(...); change only the values and keep the commas and brackets:

SettingWhat for
ServerName="..."The name in the list
ServerPassword="..."Join password (empty means open)
AdminPassword="..."The admin one. Make it long
ServerPlayerMaxNum=32Players at once
PublicPort=8211The port, if you change it

Always edit with the server stopped.

4. Port

Palworld uses 8211 on UDP:

# Windows (PowerShell as administrator)
New-NetFirewallRule -DisplayName "Palworld UDP 8211" -Direction Inbound -Protocol UDP -LocalPort 8211 -Action Allow -Profile Any

# Linux
ufw allow 8211/udp

For remote management, Palworld has a REST API and RCON, enabled in that same file. Do not open their ports to the internet if you will not use them.

5. Joining and admin

In the game, Join Multiplayer Game: find it among the community servers or type YOUR_IP:8211 in the field at the bottom. To become admin, type /AdminPassword YOUR_PASSWORD in chat; from then on you have /Save, /ShowPlayers, /KickPlayer and /BanPlayer.

The game is saved in Pal\Saved\SaveGames: that is what your backups must include.
